OCTOBER 2018

LADIES’ NIGHT UPDATE - Thursday 25thOctober 7.30-10.45pm

Tickets are still available for our upcoming Ladies’ Night and we can’t wait!  We’re raising money for new books for the Reading Dens and we can’t do that without your support so please invite friends and family.  It promises to be a great evening with the JGA’s first bar! The bar will be cash only, but the purchase of clothes is by card. Please remember that the school hall remains a stiletto free environment!

JGA TWITTER ACCOUNT @the_jga

Due to the huge popularity of the class Twitter accounts, it has been suggested that the JGA twitter account is resurrected.  Please follow us using Twitter handle @the_jga.  We will do our best to keep you as updated as possible… and if you’re a parent who feels that this is something you could support us on, please get in touch as we’d love to hear from you! jga@ga.jessegray.notts.sch.uk

COFFEE MORNING SUCCESS!

A massive thank you to everyone who popped in to support the Macmillan Coffee morning last month.  We had great support with setting up, serving and tidying up, from our JGA team.  It was a pleasure to meet so many new faces!

TUCK SHOP TREATS

On Friday 5thwe held this term’s Tuck Shop, with sweets suitable for everyone, raising £75 profit.  We had an incredible response to the Halal offering so we will ensure this is catered for in much greater quantities at the next Tuck Shop in February.  Based on the popularity of the Tuck Shop, we could do with additional support at the event in February (Friday 1stFeb). If you can pre-pack pick’n’mix or help from 3pm on the day to host the stands in either playground, please do get in touch.  jga@ga.jessegray.notts.sch.uk

CHRISTMAS PLANS

The lead up to Christmas is a busy time for the JGA as we plan the Christmas Fayre (Friday 7thDec 6pm-7.30pm) and Santa’s Grotto for the children (Friday 14thDec) during school hours.  The next JGA meeting on Monday 22ndOctober will have a heavy focus on Christmas plans so if you can spare the time, please do come along and find out how you can help this year.  We have had lots of interest from external suppliers hoping to sell exciting products at the Fayre so this year looks set to be bigger and better than ever… which means that your help is needed more than ever.

WHAT’S BEING SPENT IN YOUR CLASS?

We are very pleased to announce that class funds are already being spent!  So far we can report:

  • Class 3TH:            Time telling watches
  • Class 3P:               Classroom caddies
  • Class 2L:               Repeat subscription of The Week Junior
  • Class 1WV:          Numonic flash cards
  • Foundation:      The classes pooled their allocation and put it towards the beautiful upgrade of the Foundation outdoor space

HOW IS JGA MONEY CURRENTLY BEING SPENT?

As well as the class donations, we have recently supported the installation of additional school hall speakers in a 50/50 joint venture with the school.  The speakers will allow the children to hear their voices and their instruments during performances to an audience, which is an important part of any production.  Thank you to all our families for making this donation possible.

SEPTEMBER

A FRESH NEW YEAR

A very warm welcome to both our existing and new Jesse Grayfamilies.  The JGA will be working as hard as ever to help make this year as good as the last, continuing to raise money to bridge the funding gap for our school. Our year of events has already been planned and can be found on the JGA section of the school website.  A view of this term’s events are also listed below.

We look forward to enjoying a great year with you all and bringing you lots of great family occasions to look forward to!

HOW TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE JGA

Look out for posters around the school grounds to find out more about what the JGA is up to this year and how your amazing donations and support helped us raise over £4,000 for our school last year.

You can also find out all you need to know about the who, what, where, when and how of the JGA, via the Jesse Graywebsite – or simply email us at jga@ga.jessegray.notts.sch.uk

CLASSROOM SUPPORT FROM THE JGA

Every class is being provided with their annual £100 from money raised by the JGA.  We will keep you posted with how those funds are being spent in each class this year!

A REMINDER OF THE MACMILLAN COFFEE MORNING – FRIDAY 28THSEPTEMBER

Come and join us for coffee, cake and a chat – a great, informal way to get to know a few new faces or catch up with well-known ones!! INSTALLATION OF READING DENS IN BOTH PLAYGROUNDS – CAN YOU HELP US DRESS THEM?

April’s successful ‘Curry & Quiz’ night saw us raising money to fund ‘Our Next Big Adventure’ in which all pupils were able to vote for what they wanted to have at school.  With help from the School Council, the shortlisted entries were issued and voted for, culminating in Reading Dens for both playgrounds as the winning choice.

The dens will be installed in the next month or so and we are now looking to make them as cosy as we can so if you have any items you can donate, we’d be very grateful.  A list of hoped for items will be sent home separately.

OUR FIRST FUNDRAISER OF 2018/19… LADIES NIGHT! THURSDAY 25THOCTOBER

This school year’s first fundraising event is being held to raise £300.00 for new books for the reading dens.  The event, a fashion show hosted by Risley Fashion House, will take place on Thursday 25thOctober in the School Hall, from 7.30pm.  The event will be the first JGA event in a long time to offer a (cash only) bar, stocked with prosecco, wine, lager, cider and soft drinks.  An invite to this year’s event will be sent home towards the end of the month with tickets on sale, via Agora only, from Thursday 27thSeptember.

THE KIDS TUCKED IN

Last month’s tuck shop was a massive hit with the children!  We plan to continue the quarterly events with the next one taking place in the new school year.

DISCO SUCCESS

Friday night’s disco was a great success – with over 300 of our children enjoying the three discos.  A big shout out to our regular DJ, ‘Nigel’ of ‘Nigel’s Night Train Disco’, who you can find and book on Facebook.  The disco made us just shy of £500 which is a great profit for our school funds.  Huge thanks go to the parents and teachers who helped to make the night such a success. Our star volunteer, drawn at random, is CHERYL RICHARDS!  Cheryl, your thank you prize will be at the school office for you to collect from Wednesday 13thJune.

OUR NEXT BIG ADVENTURE

The votes are now in and we can finally announce that the winning vote for ‘OUR NEXT BIG ADVENTURE’ was for… READING DENS! It was a close-run thing! The JGA will now work with the school to provide a reading den in each playground and we look forward to unveiling the dens in the new school year.  A huge thank you to all the children that put forward an idea – and continued thanks to our school council who shortlisted the ideas for voting. For those that voted for monkey bars… look out for those too… as they might appear in the future…!

We’ve had advice from experts in regards to health & safety and we have consulted with the teachers to ensure the activities can be well-used.  It is now down to our children to make the final decision! Over the next few weeks the children will cast their votes in class and the one with the most votes will be brought to life over the summer holidays, ready to enjoy in September.

JGA CUPBOARD SORT OUT!

The JGA cupboard, at school, is need of a good sort out – from donations of books to uniform, we have lots of stock!  If you’re free one Monday or Friday and can help to go through the contents, please email Rebecca Muldoonat jga@ga.jessegray.notts.sch.uk

A copy of the minutes can be found on the JGA website for up to date information on the past year’s fundraising, accounts and events.

OUR NEXT BIG ADVENTURE

All the children were recently invited to choose or design an idea for JGA-raised money to be spent on. Ideas were posted into a box outside Miss Law’s office, ready for Mrs Moore’s School Council to shortlist this week. We will announce the shortlisted ideas very soon, after which, all the children will be invited to vote for their favourite idea.  The one with the most votes will be the focus for JGA fundraising over the next few months. Thank you to everyone who took part and supported Our Next Big Adventure!

FUNDING GAP – YOUR HELP IS NEEDED MORE THAN EVER!

It has been announced that Nottingham will be impacted by £22 million Government funding cuts, resulting in schools losing up to £578 per pupil.  This lack of funding presents an even greater need for school PTAs to do as much as they can to close the gap.  We kindly ask that all of our Jesse Gray families support our school in whatever ways they can to assist the JGA in raising money - now more than ever.  Your help at events, your fundraising ideas and the positive communication of JGA activity is hugely appreciated.  There are many ways in which you can support the JGA so please get in touch any time.  jga@ga.jessegray.notts.sch.uk

EVENTS AND PLANS ON THE HORIZON

Following the AGM, the new Trustees have met to discuss the rest of this academic year and the following year to secure dates for your favourite JGA events.  We have also planned some new and exciting events including a Ladies Night, Christmas Wreath making and a Movie Night for the children.  More will be communicated as the year unfolds!

HELPING HANDS

What’s happening in February?

NEW YEAR, NEW LOOK!

We are delighted to announce that the JGA has been given its very own identity, designed to complement our School’s own aims, vision and values.  This brilliant ‘new look’  JGA has been created by Jesse Gray parent, Adam Travis, owner of Brand & Communications agency, Cubic.

It is a great privilege to have Adam offer and provide support on this element of the JGA as he will assist with much of the artwork we require to communicate with parents.  From event posters to our monthly newsletter, you will start to see the new branding appear in all things JGA.

FRIDAY 9TH FEBRUARY – COFFEE AFTERNOON, 2pm – 3.15pm

We are hosting this term’s coffee afternoon on Friday 9th Feb and we look forward to seeing you there!  Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available – as well as water & juice for young children.  Come along for a chat and to see what’s going on over the forthcoming half term as we host leaflets and flyers from local clubs and family venues.  The second hand uniform rack will also be there if you’d like to pop by for a bargain!

FRIDAY 2ND MARCH – SCHOOL DISCO TIME!

Details of the school disco have now been circulated digitally by email and also via a letter home to parents.  All payment will be processed via Sims Agora this year so don’t forget to log on and book your child’s/children’s place – along with your availability to help at the discos.  This year’s event is sure to be as lively as ever and we hope the children are looking forward to it!  A copy of the letter can be found below.

WHAT’S BEING SPENT IN YOUR CLASS?

Courtesy of JGA funds, we are delighted to report the past couple of month’s recent class spends have included…

  • Class 4B - Miss Barratt and the children of 4B have invested in a class pet.  Their stick insects are due to arrive very soon!
  • Years 5 and 6 – the classes have clubbed together to buy a large selection of new books for the children to enjoy at school and at home
  • Class 2W – The children in Mrs Winfield’s class have been enjoying their recent purchases… plastic storage boxes, hats, binoculars and plastic animals… all in aid of this term’s topic.

HELP FROM OUR FAMILIES IS PARAMOUNT

We are hugely grateful to the parents and families who have helped - and continue to help – at our JGA events and fundraising activities.  We have welcomed a few new parents this school year but we are in need of many more.

We believe it is important that, as a team, we represent all year groups to provide a well-rounded view of what our families want from their PTA.  At present, we represent only a small number of year groups and we’d like to encourage parents from all years… those who’ve been involved in the past and can share their experience, those who can offer their own expertise to a service we may provide, and those who just want to do what they can.

WEDNESDAY 14TH MARCH, JGA AGM

The date is now set for our AGM.  Unlike other school PTA’s, we are a registered charity and we must manage our work, our expenses and our trustee responsibilities in line with our constitution and The Charity’s Commission.  This year’s AGM will present the past year’s accounts and activities along with plans for the forthcoming year including proposed activities, spends and trustee positions.  A full agenda will be listed on our website page with the JG school website.

YOUR KINDNESS AT CHRISTMAS

It feels like such a long time ago now, but we are still reminiscing about the incredible generosity from our JG families.  We cannot express our thanks enough!

We fulfilled our commitments to our social housing charities and delivered a huge array of essential gifts to The Friary too.  Our year 6 children received a visit from The Friary so they were able to understand the importance of their donations and what they mean to those who benefit.  All of our charities were incredibly grateful and asked us to pass on their thanks. You can see from the photograph below, the pile of gifts was huge!

As always, our JGA-ers were on hand to help Santa and ensure every class enjoyed their visit, receiving a small sweet treat.  Santa was asked for some super requests from the children… from blu tac to Ferraris!

As we do after every JGA event, we put all of our helpers names in a hat to win a small thank you gift.  With so much help from our families for both the Grotto and sales of the hampers, we have pulled two names.  Congratulations – and sincere thanks – to both Jo Burr and Jo Travis.  Please visit the school office from Friday 9th to collect your thank you gift.

SPONSORING A JGA EVENT

If you run your own business, or work for a business that is happy to sponsor local CSR activities, please think of the JGA!  There are often costs associated with our events that we simply cannot do without.  From the services of St John’s Ambulance to the printing of our posters and letters.

DECEMBER RECAP

Thank you to all our families who kindly visited Santa's Grotto with a gift to donate.  It was such a pleasure for us to present the much needed gifts and supplies to our charities.  A reminder of the charities we supported this year can be found in our 'previous news' section so do take a look!

WHAT’S BEING SPENT IN YOUR CLASS?

It's a little too early in the month to update you on current class spends but we will update you again in February.

PLANS FOR THE YEAR AHEAD AT THE NEXT MEETING - 29TH JAN 8PM

Our next JGA meeting is on Monday 29th January at 8pm in the school's IT room.  It would be great to see you there as we start discussing this quarter's upcoming events and also plans for the second quarter.  There is everything to discuss from coffee afternoons and the school disco, to ideas for fundraising and a reflection on our past year's learnings so if you think you could offer your advice, support or experience, do come along.

COULD YOU SPONSOR A JGA EVENT?

If any of our parents could provide sponsorship support at our events we'd be very keen to hear from you.  Our annual football tournament is a great example of where sponsorship funds further ensure our health and safety by covering the cost of St John's Ambulance to attend.  If you think you can help, please contact us anytime at jga@ga.jessegray.notts.sch.uk

A final opportunity to say thank you to everyone for their support throughout 2017.  We are very fortunate to have such a dedicated team of parents at Jesse Gray.  With lots to look forward to in the new year, from the school disco to Midsummer Madness, we would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and we look forward to seeing you again in January.

What’s happening in November?

THANK YOU FOR HELPING US MAKE OUR FIREWORKS EVENING A GREAT SUCCESS

We are delighted to announce that this year’s Fireworks event raised a fantastic £1,400.00 – both in ticket sales and stall sales on the evening – generating over £600.00 of profit to go back into our school.

Thank you to everyone who attended the fireworks event on 3rd November, we really hope you enjoyed this year's offering and the incredible display from Magic & Miracle Fireworks.

We would like to say a big thank you to our incredible team of teachers and parents who helped to make the event possible.  We really cannot do this without you.  As we do with all of our events now, we can reveal that the lucky winner from our ‘helpers draw’ is SARAH JACKSON.  Sarah, your thank you gift from the JGA is now waiting for you at the school office.

It's not just the time we all give to this great event - it's also the kind donations we receive.  Our request for pocket money gifts, cakes and chocolate were very gratefully received.  We also took the time to contact local businesses to see if they could support our event and their generosity was amazing.  Our thanks go to:

A huge thank you to all the families who helped us make Saturday 14th October such a great success.  Special thanks to Karl Chessell and Alice Morton who organised the entire event again this year with incredibly kind help from our parents running stalls to keep the children entertained as well as our teachers who gallantly showed their support in attendance.

We’d also like to show our appreciation to MCS Event pro who sponsored this year’s event as well as Thomas Yates and Belvoir Brewery who kindly donated a case of bottles for us to present as this year’s prizes.  We raised a fantastic £210 amount for our school.

What happened in July?

JGA monthly meeting (Took place on Monday 17th July)

Thank you to all who attended.  We took a good look at all events for the forthcoming academic year and made plans to raise the profile of the JGA, the work we do and the funds we raise!

THE JOLLY WENBORN - THE JGA HAS SET SAIL IN THE INFANT PLAYGROUND!

It has been a very exciting few months building up to the announcement of the amazing pirate ship that has been installed in the infant playground, thanks to the work of the JGA.  While the ship is a welcome and eagerly anticipated addition, it also marks the retirement of one of Jesse Gray’s most loved and long-standing teachers, Alison Wenborn.  It has therefore been aptly named, The Jolly Wenborn!

The ship was officially unveiled on Monday 10th July with a naming ceremony alongside all KS1 children on Tuesday 11th July.

We are sure that it will bring great enjoyment for many years to come.

The JGA would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Wenborn for her incredible work at Jesse Gray as she has taught many of our own children over the years.

We wish you all the very best for a relaxed and enjoyable retirement!

DRIVER AWARE POSTER COMPETITION - THE JGA PURCHASES NEW POSTERS AND PRIZES FOR WINNERS!

Letters were sent home to encourage our school’s budding artists to design a new ‘driver aware’ poster.  These are large prints that are placed on the railings of both the infant and junior school entrances to encourage people to drive and park safely around our school.

The JGA pledged 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes to two separate age groups up to year five and the winners were announced in assembly on 10th July as:

KS1

1st: Alex Hrkalovic Class 12

2nd : Freya Rajabally Class10

3rd : Emilia Dziakonski Class13

KS2

1st : Caitlin Keywood Class 5

2nd: Madeleine Heaps Class 4

3rd: Stuti Gupta Class 4

Alex and Caitlin will see their posters printed and displayed on the first week back to school in September.

Congratulations to all of our artistic winners and thank you to everyone who sent in their designs.  Mrs Lloyd had a very tough job picking the winners due to so many fantastic entries.

MIDSUMMER MADNESS SUCCESS! THE JGA WORKING HARD TO ENTERTAIN OUR FAMILIES AND RAISE FUNDS!

This year’s summer fayre was another great success as we raised just over £1,200 for our school!

Thank you to everyone who attended the event - we really hope that you and your families enjoyed the stalls, the activities and this year’s new additions:  hog roast, grilled cheese, tea & coffee and Stella & Dot jewellery.

Our external supporters make a huge difference and each and every one of them supports the JGA in their own way.  A huge thank you to:

A very heartfelt thank you to our team of incredible helpers, none of whom we could do these events without… and we almost didn’t!  If you haven’t been part of a JGA event before but think you could offer just 30 minutes of your time to another event, please do get in touch. jga@ga.jessegray.notts.sch.uk

RAFFLE PRIZE WINNERS FROM MIDSUMMER MADNESS

Well done to our Midsummer raffle prize winners!  This year’s raffle did not disappoint with beauty products, wine, whisky, signed football memorabilia and confectionery from incredibly kind donors including Lorraine Collier and Kathryn Harvey.

STAR HELPER COMPETITION - A THANK YOU FROM THE JGA

To show our appreciation to the volunteers who offer their time to help at our events, we’ve introduced a ‘star helper prize’ where all volunteer names are entered into a draw to win a prize!  Jo Walkey was this event’s lucky winner!  Well done Jo – and thank you!
