Every class in school is taught Music twice a week by Mrs Walton, the Music Specialist Teacher: a singing session with other classes in the same planning team and a single class session, where all other aspects of music are explored. Year groups are taught a one-year cycle of topics, which cover all the key musical skills of composition, performance, listening and appraising. The table below shows what each year group will be studying in Music this half term:
|Y1||Long and short sounds|
|Y2||Using sounds descriptively (weather focus)|
|Y3||Beat and rhythm|
|Y4||Using sounds expressively (links with art)|
Jesse Gray also offers instrumental tuition in a wide variety of brass, woodwind and string instruments, as well as drum kit, to Year 3 and above, with Suzuki violin from Year 1. The school choir is run by Mrs Walton on a Monday morning and is open to anyone who enjoys singing from Year 4 upwards. Mr Reckless runs the school orchestra on a Friday morning for musicians who are recommended by their instrumental teacher, having attained the required standard. At lunchtime, the Year 1 and 2 recorder and ukulele groups rehearse.
There are many opportunities to hear music being performed at Jesse Gray through our FS2 and KS1 nativities, the Christmas Celebration at St. Paul's Church, termly Suzuki concerts, recorder group concerts, two instrumental concerts (featuring the orchestra, small ensembles and solosits), choir concert, Year 6 production and Year Group Assemblies.
