Curriculum

As a school community, we believe our children possess unique qualities and talents ; as such they have the right to succeed, recognise their own gifts & talents, and develop who they are, in a safe and caring environment.

Our school ethos is firmly rooted in our values - “Success For All – Learning for Life “

Jesse Gray is a vibrant community where diversity and equality are embraced and children love to learn. We enjoy challenges that will equip us for the future. We pursue excellence through an inspirational curriculum which engages  and motivates our children to achieve their full potential and develop a passion for learning.

Curriculum Intent
Jesse Gray’s  curriculum  is broad and balanced, taking into account our school’s unique characteristics. It is co-designed by teachers and children, using wherever possible, an enquiry based approach that enables children to have opportunities to  lead, and teachers to facilitate, the learning.  We build children’s aspirations - demonstrating possibilities for their future lives. Our values underpin all that we do in school, fostering independence, resilience and high expectations of self.               Striving to do our best, each day.

Indeed, high expectations in speech, language and communication from day one in FS2 naturally strengthen the children’s ability to learn at a deeper level - allowing them to articulate their learning, demonstrate quality thinking, and apply skills / knowledge across learning.

Physical and mental wellbeing are prioritised within our curriculum design and it allows children opportunities to develop, refine and exhibit spiritual, moral, social and cultural understanding.

Curriculum Implementation
Our curriculum balances the national expectations and a range of rich experiences allowing our children to flourish. Clear, strategic planning allows the curriculum to be dynamic and adapt to school context and children’s needs. Age related expectations combine the acquisition of knowledge , the development of core skills and opportunity to apply them -  to create a purposeful and exciting learning journey for every child. Our curriculum is  based upon  high expectations for  our  children's learning  journey to enable  them to combine transferrable skills, demonstrate a breadth of vocabulary and develop strong cross curricular links within local community & wider still.

High quality, learning environments stimulate and engage quality thinking and reasoning. Explicit weekly and medium term planning is responsive to children’s needs; incorporating a myriad of approaches to teaching and learning.
Peer joint professional development supports all staff to further develop effective curriculum pedagogy and  skill.

Our effective  feedback policy is a  framework which provides opportunity for children to reflect on their learning and think deeply in their feedback through a variety of effective approaches.

Curriculum Impact
We monitor our curriculum throughout the year to gauge the impact of its design. Senior leaders & subject leaders review learning ; evaluating through pupil , parent  & staff voice ,using regular monitoring  activities. They provide individual feedback to teachers & year  groups move practice forward; celebrating positives & WAGOLLs [What A Good One Looks Like] , and highlighting areas of development through our existing Teaching  & Learning Excellence Project, and teacher cpd [training] activities.

Our whole school team work to strengthen our ethos and vision to reflect upon our curriculum, and share outcomes driving forward next steps. Teachers ,curriculum leaders and  governors conduct & evaluate  performance analysis at individual, class, year group and key stage level; measuring it against school and local targets.

We don’t confuse coverage with progress when assessing. Learning is measured through careful analysis of application of skills across the curriculum; demonstrating how acquisition of knowledge is enhanced dramatically through strategically  planned learning  which fosters quality thinking and understanding, for all.

Our balanced approach to the curriculum is not at the expense of high standards in core subject areas. High standards and enabling children to reach & exceed national expectations  is of vital importance if they are to succeed at the next stage of their education and go on to achieve full and happy lives, and careers.

Our curriculum aims  to be  what we  would  describe as KNOWLEDGE ENGAGED : characterised by depth of  learning of key higher order  skills balanced by rich knowledge led  content,  with an excellent range of experiences, ensuring that every pupil at Jesse Gray makes excellent progress both academically and personally. Our unique curriculum ensures that every child is given the opportunity to shine and flourish.
