Autumn Term News

Monday 14th December 2015

Well, it is now our last Monday in 2015 and hasn’t the year simply flown by so far? I have been extremely impressed with Class 11 throughout the whole term. You have worked hard and really given everything 100%. Well done to you all. This week is a little bit mixed. Mrs Viggars will not be in class on Monday or Wednesday but you will have Mrs Hazelden and Mrs Johnston to keep you busy. Remember that it is Santa’s Grotto today so if you feel you can, please bring along a gift for a child who is not quite as lucky as you. Santa will be delighted to receive so many presents. Remember that we have our class post-box outside the classroom door, so if you have any cards, just drop them in and we will hand them out at the end of the day. It is the Christmas Hamper draw today! Make sure you have your tickets ready. Ours looks truly fantastic so thank you to everyone who has contributed. Finally, I would just like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday and I look forward to seeing you in 2016.

From Mrs Viggars

Thursday 10th December

Quick update......well done for two FANTASTIC performances of 'A Midwife Crisis' It was amazing!

Treat Day - remember that treat day is tomorrow. remember to wear your own clothes and be ready to have some fun, treats and popcorn!

Monday 7th December

Well it’s here! Nativity week. I hope you are all as excited as I am about our performances. Remember to sing out well and say your lines nice and loudly. It is going to be a brilliant performance.

Also this week..

Literacy – we will be making our own non-fiction Christmas books. Try to think about what sub heading you might use in yours. Also, try to  think about the other non-fiction features that you might use.

Maths – Geometry. This is a posh word for shape. We will be learning about open and closed shapes, polygons, venn diagrams and much much more.

Hamper – remember that our hamper is called ‘Sweets and Treats’. If you have anything at home, please send it in to make our look even yummier than it already does.

Finally, we only need 4 more marbles to get a treat day. Will it be this week? Try really hard and we might get there!

Keep being brilliant Class 11

Well done to everyone in Class 11 for learning their lines for our nativity play. You are all doing a great job. Please make sure that your costume is in school as soon as possible so we can try everything on during Wednesday’s performance. Also, remember if you have not sent your ticket request form in yet…make sure you do very soon so your parents can see what a great show you have out on.

Literacy – More non-fcition fun. You will be writing your own page of a non-fiction text this week. Think about animals you like and know about.

Numeracy – TIME! Learn to read it. O’clock, half past, quarter past, quarter to, and five minute intervals. I hope you’ve got the ‘time’ to learn all of this!

Monday 23rd November 2015

It’s getting cold! Today on playground duty it was very chilly. Well done to everyone as you all had nice warm coats with you, and most of you had them zipped up too! Remember that if you bring hats, gloves and scarves they should have your name clearly written in them so they don’t get lost.

A big thank you to everyone who has been practising your lines for our nativity. It is going to be a great show and I know that all of your relatives will love it. Remember to send in your red letters for ticket requests ASAP please.

This week in literacy we are going to be looking at Non-fiction texts and in particular, non-chronological reports. We will be finding out about animals and we might even make our own books!

In maths we are continuing to look at number. Make sure that you compete your homework as soon as you can. I think you will fly through it because you have all worked so hard on place value.

Monday 16th November 2015

Another wonderful week in Class 11, thank you so much for all of your hard work. It was lovely to meet all of your parents. I hope that you have been doing some handwriting practise and really focusing on those number bonds-they are really important!

This week we will continue to learn about the Great Fire of London. We will be looking at artists work and recreating our own versions.

In literacy, we will be thinking about using connectives and also writing our own descriptions of the fire using the super descriptive techniques we learnt last week.

In numeracy, we will be practising adding on a number line but we will also think about using the tens and ones too!

Finally, I hope you all gave your parents the ‘Nativity’ letters and have been practising your words at home. I know that you’re getting great at the songs!

Keep working hard and smiling lots!

Mrs Viggars

Friday 6th November 2015

What a blustery week. I really enjoyed all of the fireworks and seeing so many of you in school last night. I hope you enjoy any fireworks that you see at the weekend. Make sure that you always bring a coat to school so that we can still go out if it is drizzling!

We have had a great week getting into our new topic of ‘The great Fire of London’. You already know so much about it that I think you will be experts by the end of the unit. Remember, if you have anything at home that you find about The Great Fire, please bring it in and share with the rest of the class.

Next week we will continue to learn about The Great Fire of London and use this as the basis for some of our writing. In literacy we will be looking at how we can use, not only adjectives, but adverbs in our writing to make it more descriptive and exciting.

In maths we will continue to look at addition and subtraction, especially focusing on how we can use the same numbers in both addition and subtraction problems.

Next week is also Parents Evening. Please see the lists below if you have forgotten your time! I am looking forward to seeing you all.

We had an amazing day at Beaumanor Hall. Here is our photostory

I hope that this helps the children with their holiday homework of writing a recount of the trip. Their story maps will help them to orderr the events and add detail to thier writing. In our lessons, we left a line between each section to show we were moving on to a new event. we even used time connectives like then, next, afterwards etc. Good luck and we hope you all enjoy it!

This week we are...

Maths - we will be looking at addition and subtraction and how the two link!

Remember too that Friday is the last day of this half term so you can all have a good rest next week. Please remember to read, practise your spellings and complete your homework int he week though.

Keep smiling everyone!

Monday 6th October 2015

Another busy week has flown by. I hope that you all enjoyed your extra day at the weekend. The teachers were very busy thinking of new ways to teach you exciting things!

Just a few reminders this week…

  1. Spellings. These will be sent home in the red spelling book. The children will then do their test in the back of the book so please ensure this is sent to school each day. Tests will be on either Monday or Tuesday. The children will test each other: this was a huge success yesterday. If a child gets 9 or 10 correct on their test they will move onto the next set of words. If not, they will keep the same words for a little bit more practise.
  2. Reading Books. Please ensure that you sign in the reading record each time you hear your child read. When they are ready to have their book changed all they need to do is put it in the green ‘I’d like to change my book please’ box and I will check that they have been heard at home. The children need to put their books in the box first thing in the morning so I have time to check – I do remind them of this.
  3. Head lice! We have had quite a few cases of head lice so far this year. Please ensure that you check your child’s hair and treat if required. Also, let us know if there is a problem and we will send out a letter to remind others to check too.

Thank you for all of your support with the wonderful Autumn Homework that is coming in already – they look wonderful. Your children are very creative!

If you have any worries or concerns please pop in and see me or drop me an email. Yours Lucy Viggars

All of Jesse Gray were amazing on Sunday when you took part in the Mini Robin Hood Marathon. Congratulations to all of you.

This week is spellings week. Today you have brought home your spellings. Please learn them. Next week I will test you on them and if you get at least 9 of them correct I will give you some new ones to learn. I'm sure you will all do brilliantly!

Remember the Friday 2nd October is INSET day so we wont come to school...but remember you could do some of your Autumn Challenge homework instead!

I know that you have all really enjoyed using Numicon this week. Tell your mums and dads about the shapes and what numbers they represent. Look at this picture to help you!

Keep working hard Class 11!

Wednesday 23rd September 2015

Wow. Another great week Class11. We have worked really hard this week, especially in literacy. We have all learnt a lot about simple sentences and how we make sure we know where the full stop goes. You have also been super at adding wonderful adjectives to your work. Your writing is coming along brilliantly!

Maths has been a week of adding and subtracting. I am really pleased that you have been enjoying our number bonds practise. Make sure you keep on practising lots and lots at home.

This week has been our first week of homework. You have some counting in 10s work to do and a project all about Autumn. I hope that you enjoy doing it all at home. Remember to use things to help you if you get stuck e.g. a number square. Next week you will receive your first set of spellings.

Finally, thank you all for bringing your trip money in. I am really looking forward to going on our pirate adventure on Thursday 22nd October.

Keep working hard

What a week! Thank you so much for all your hard work in Pirate Week. We  had a great time in Year Two and we all enjoyed beginning our topic with so many pirate activities. Please feel free to pop into our classroom and take a look at the things we have already done. Our topic board is almost full!

This week we will continue looking at pirate fun across the curriculum but with a bit more of a literacy and maths focus.

In literacy we will be looking at writing is clear sentences and using adjectives. We will encourage the children to put an adjective before each noun. For example

The big boat was sailing on the calm sea.

Noun      Adjective

Please try to encourage these ideas in any work you do at home.

In maths we will be looking at numbers and place value. We will use the terms Tens and Ones (not units anymore) to think about which number is bigger/smaller/ greater than/ less than etc. We will also be thinking about counting. We will count in 2,3,5,10 starting from any number. For example…can your child count in 10s from 4, 3s from 7?

Finally, our topic work this week will focus on the 7 continents and 5 oceans. The children will find out where they are and how pirates would have sailed around the world.

I hope that you have all received the Beaumanor Hall letter. We know that the children will have a great time on the pirate trip and hope that you can support us in it.

Many thanks

Please feel free to email or pop in if you have anything you would like to discuss.

Lucy Viggars

PS If your child needs to change their reading book, please ask them to put it in the ‘reading book box’ and I will check that they are ready.
